EMDR - EYE MOVEMENT DESENSITIZATION AND REPROCESSING

What it is:

EMDR is a powerful tool for reducing distress related to traumatic memories, upsetting experiences, and life challenges. In lieu of traditional talk therapy, EMDR helps to remove blocks and accelerate and allow proper processing of these disturbances.

How it’s used:

When a distressing or traumatic experience occurs and isn’t fully processed, there is often a trigger or memory that “freezes” in the brain. This can cause us to develop certain automatic responses or adaptations that make it difficult to respond how we’d like to in relationships, at work, etc. EMDR is used to target this frozen memory so the intensity can be desensitized and reprocessed. By pinpointing the worst of the experience and its accompanying “stuck” beliefs, we can work to create new responses to enhance and expand your ability to connect with others and yourself. It is considered by some researchers that EMDR works similarly to REM (rapid eye movement) during sleep - aiding the body’s natural ability to restore and allow movement through channels that aid in emotional processing and development.

What can EMDR treat?

If you are finding something in your life that creates a feeling of “stuckness”, or you are frustrated with something you can’t seem to move past and it’s affecting your relationships, work, or keeping you from really living life - it is likely EMDR can help.
